Hang Tien is divided into two sections, first discovered by residents and later surveyed by the British Vietnam Caving Expedition Team in 1994 and 2015. Experts believe that Hang Tien 1 and Hang Tien 2 Caves may be connected by an underground river, giving the cave a total length of up to 4.5 kilometers.

During heavy rains, a majestic white waterfall cascades from the cave ceiling, creating a truly awe-inspiring scene.
Hang Tien 1 consists of three distinct levels, and its terrain poses a real challenge for explorers. The narrow passages are filled with countless sharp, jagged rocks scattered in complex formations. Visitors must continuously climb up and down while carefully navigating to avoid contact with the sharp edges of the rocks.
In stark contrast to Hang Tien 1, the entrance to Hang Tien 2 is quite narrow, only about the width of a single arm span. The cave walls are adorned with spiral rock patterns, guiding visitors into its vast interior. Inside, the cave floor is covered with fine sand and features an impressive variety of stalactites and stalagmites, including coral stalactites, drapery stalactites, rimstone terraces, cave pearls, and towering stone columns. When is the Best Season to Trek and Explore Hang Tien?
Hang Tien trekking tours are operated by Oxalis Adventure from December to mid-September of the following year. Each season offers different landscapes and weather conditions, as outlined below:
- Spring (March – late May): The weather gradually warms up, with temperatures ranging from 20–30°C, while vegetation begins to sprout after the cold winter. During this season, the campsite offers clear skies for stargazing and moonlit nights.
- Summer (June – late August): Temperatures range from 27–37°C, yet the trek remains pleasantly cool since two-thirds of the journey is shaded by the primary forest canopy. Inside Hang Tien, the temperature stays around 22–25°C, while the natural infinity pool at the campsite becomes especially clear and refreshing, fed by the cool underground river.
- Autumn (September – November): Temperatures range from 17–23°C, and this season often brings heavy rainfall, so most cave expeditions are temporarily suspended. However, if the weather is favorable, the Hang Tien – Tu Lan Discovery Tour (HTL) still operates as usual.
- Winter (December – February): Temperatures range from 19–23°C, with slightly chilly weather and golden sunlight that makes the natural scenery even more vibrant. This season is especially popular among adventurers thanks to the dry climate and cool conditions, which make outdoor activities less exhausting.

The journey covers a total distance of about 9.5 km, taking travelers across the cool, clear waters of the Rao Nan River before ascending a hill that leads into the jungle. The initial terrain consists of rocky slopes, followed by rugged trails descending into a valley, and then a vast boulder field leading to the entrance of Hang Tien 1. Inside, the expedition explores the soaring cave ceiling and massive stalactite formations before exiting through another passage that leads to the natural infinity pool. From there, the route follows the Rao Nan River back to the main road. This tour is rated Adventure Level 2 – Easy.
Hang Tien – Tu Lan Discovery (HTL)
The Hang Tien – Tu Lan Discovery (HTL) is perfect for travelers with only two days who still want to conquer the majestic Hang Tien along with two characteristic caves located at the gateway of the Tu Lan area.
Travelers will spend the first day trekking deep into the jungle, climbing hills of over 150 meters, and crossing a challenging boulder field to admire the terraced stalactite formations and swirling dome ceiling of Hang Tien 1. In the afternoon, the team returns to Tan Hoa Village to enjoy a cozy dinner at a local home and rest overnight at Tu Lan Lodge. On the second day, the expedition continues with explorations of the stunning stalactite system in Hang Chuot, ancient fossils in Hang Hung Ton, and an underground river swim of about 150 meters.
The Hang Tien – Tu Lan Discovery Tour (HTL) is rated Adventure Level 2 – Easy, with a total distance of 18 km, including 2.3 km inside the caves.
Hang Tien Endeavor Tour (HT2)
For travelers who wish to explore the pristine beauty and unique formations of the dry caves at the far end of the Tu Lan system, the Hang Tien Endeavor Tour (HT2) is the perfect choice.
Travelers will swim through Hang Fun, with its maze-like passages and underground river system, and explore the one-of-a-kind stalactite formations of Hang Ho Tien. The most striking highlights of the journey are the challenging boulder field at the cave entrance and the jagged rock layers inside Hang Tien 1. Yet, the reward for every drop of sweat is the awe-inspiring geology—huge swirling cave ceilings resembling a galaxy, along with the magnificent stalactite formations of Hang Tien 2.
On rainy days, visitors may witness a waterfall hundreds of meters high cascading down the giant terraced stalactite formation, and enjoy the thrill of riding Flying Fox across the underground stream.
The expedition includes one night camping at the Hang Tien campsite, where guests can relax in the natural infinity pool deep in the jungle. On the second evening, travelers will enjoy dinner at a local home and stay overnight at the Rural Homestay, floating houses built by the local community.
The Hang Tien Endeavor tour (HT2) lasts 3 days and 2 nights, covering a total distance of 12 km with 3.5 km inside the caves. It is rated Adventure Level 2 – Easy.
Hang Tien Exploration (HT3)
The Hang Tien Exploration tour is for travelers who want to experience the journey like a true cave explorer. You will trek through deep jungle and high mountains, swim across underground rivers, and cross remote valleys to reach caves untouched by human footsteps.
This journey lasts 4 days and 3 nights, taking travelers across 28 km of untouched jungle and mountains, including 3.5 km inside the caves and several hills over 100 meters high.
Adventurers will begin their journey at the gateway of the Tu Lan cave system, crossing the Rao Nan River and climbing slopes to explore Secret Cave (Hang Bi Mat) and Hung Ton Cave. The trek then becomes more challenging, with a full day of jungle hiking, hill climbing, cave swimming, and crossing the 14 km-long Hung Nhai Valley. The following day, travelers will conquer Hang Tien 1 and Hang Tien 2, discovering geological formations dating back over 5 million years before ascending a 200-meter hill to return to the main road.
During this expedition, guests will spend two nights camping in the jungle and one night resting at Tu Lan Lodge after enjoying dinner at a local home.
The Hang Tien Exploration Tour (HT3) is rated Adventure Level 4 – Challenging.
Important Notes for Joining Hang Tien Trekking Tours
- Hang Tien trekking tours are only available for travelers aged 16 to 70.
- Guests who wish to join Hang Tien and other cave trekking tours must register in advance through the Oxalis Adventure website.
- Depending on the tour, travelers need to meet certain physical and trekking requirements, such as:
- Being able to run 3 km within 30 minutes.
- Being able to climb 5 flights of stairs continuously without shortness of breath or dizziness.
- During the trek, guests must also follow safety and environmental guidelines.
- Do not use chemical-based soaps or shampoos when bathing in the jungle or caves.
- Protect the environment: do not litter, and never touch stalactites or cave formations.
- Respect nature: avoid making loud noises inside the caves.
