Detailed 6-Day Itinerary of the Son Doong Cave Expedition Tour

Day 1: Dong Hoi – Phong Nha & Safety Briefing (Briefing)

Before officially starting the journey, travelers need to arrive in Dong Hoi no later than 14:00 to be picked up by the organizer’s vehicle and transferred to Phong Nha. Here, you will check into your room at the Commander Lodge and spend some time visiting the Phong Nha Caves Exploration Museum to learn about the geological formations of the heritage region beforehand.

Around 17:30 – 18:00, the safety briefing and team meeting (briefing) will take place at the Oxalis office. This is a mandatory session. The expert will thoroughly cover safety regulations, conduct medical checks, and hand over protective gear. Any guests absent from this briefing will be denied participation in the tour without a refund.

Guests will also proceed to separate their luggage: larger items will be packed into the provided plastic bags (maximum 7kg) to be handed over to the porter team for transport into the cave ahead of time. Essential daytime items such as phones, cameras, and sunscreen will be kept in your personal backpack to carry yourself. The group will enjoy a cozy dinner together at a restaurant before returning to their rooms for a good night’s sleep.

Day 2: Jungle trekking – Conquering Hang En

The first morning begins with breakfast at 07:00, after which guests complete their luggage drop-off for the porters. The vehicle will pick up the group and head along the historic 20 Quyết Thắng Road to reach the trekking starting point at Km35.

The first challenge is conquering Ba Gian Hill, a steep, rugged rocky slope rising from 150m to 350m under the canopy of the old-growth forest. After about 1 hour of descent and half an hour tracking along a small stream, the group will stop at Ban Doong. This is an isolated village of the Bru-Van Kieu ethnic minority nestled deep in the valley. Travelers will have time for lunch, enjoying a rustic meal by the stream, and learning about the unique cultural life of the local people.

In the afternoon, the journey continues with a trek of about 3 hours along the Rao Thuong Stream. You will have to wade across the stream dozens of times under the sun, so your clothes and shoes will definitely be soaked all day. As the majestic limestone ridges open up, the colossal entrance of Hang En appears completely breathtaking. Guests are equipped with headlights and helmets to scramble over large boulders and head 700m deep into the cave.

The campsite for the first night is located on a fine sandy stretch, directly facing a turquoise underground river. You can freely swim, relax in the cool water, watch tens of thousands of swifts fluttering across the soaring cave ceiling, and enjoy a hot dinner prepared by the chefs.

Note: The first day’s route is a practical physical fitness test. Anyone who cannot complete this leg or suffers a serious injury will have to return to Phong Nha to ensure the safety of the entire group, and no tour costs will be refunded.

Day 3: Exploring Hang En Exit – Entering the Heart of Son Doong Cave

After a nutrient-rich breakfast, the team packs up their gear and departs at 09:00. Travelers spend about 30 minutes walking through the remaining section of Hang En to exit through the back door, opening up to a misty, lush green valley. The group continues crossing rivers and climbing a rugged rocky slope for about 45 minutes to reach the lunch stop right on the threshold of Son Doong Cave’s entrance.

Here, guests are fitted with specialized safety harnesses and listen to safety regulations once more. The adventure into the heart of the earth officially begins as you abseil down a steep, vertical cliff about 80m – 90m deep from the cave entrance. Support from the safety rope system and safety assistants will help you navigate this leg safely. Càng xuống sâu, luồng khí lạnh kèm sương mù dày đặc thổi ra từ lòng hang sẽ khiến bạn rùng mình phấn khích.

Stepping into the heart of Son Doong, a colossal space akin to another planet unfolds before your eyes. You will scramble over massive boulders and cross two underground rivers with water levels ranging from knee to waist-deep. Before heading towards the campsite, the magnificent fossilized stalagmite formation named “Hand of Dog” will appear under the mystical light of Doline 1. The team will set up camp at Doline 1 around 15:00 – 16:00. If weather conditions permit, the tour guide will take you swimming in the cool underground river or exploring the million-year-old fossil corridor.

Day 4: Doline 1 – Watch Out for Dinosaurs – Garden of Edam – Doline 2

The third day is considered the leg with the most spectacular landscapes, but the terrain is also the most complex, requiring you to constantly maneuver through narrow rocky crevices and scale steep rock faces. From Campsite 1, you will climb back up toward the skylight to reach the first primary forest inside the cave: “Watch Out for Dinosaurs” (Vọng Khủng Long). If you are lucky enough to travel during the early months of the year (January – March) on a clear day, you will witness massive, razor-sharp sunbeams piercing from the top of the sinkhole over 400m high straight down into the cave, creating a surreal stage of light sweeping across the Wedding Cake stalagmite.

After enjoying a light lunch, the group continues past beautiful cave pearl fields, tracing along the edges of calcium-rimmed pools to head toward the second sinkhole. Here, a real primary forest thrives right under the ground with a carpet of green ferns and ancient trees towering up to 40m, aptly named the Garden of Edam. The convergence of climates creates layers of clouds floating around the tree canopy.

The team will trek through this underground forest for about 45 minutes, then overcome slippery mud slopes to arrive at Doline 2 campsite around 14:00 – 15:00. In the afternoon, travelers will venture deep into the dark recesses of the cave to search for eyeless endemic creatures (such as blind spiders, blind fish, and white termites) and admire the magnificent stalactite formations.

Day 5: Conquering the Great Wall of Vietnam – Chay Lap Farmstay

The final day inside the cave presents the most formidable challenge of the journey: conquering the Great Wall of Vietnam – a massive 90m-high calcite wall blocking the end of Son Doong Cave. To approach the foot of the wall, the team will move along the Passchendaele corridor. During high-water months, you will float on rafts over pristine, crystal-clear water, but if it is the dry season and the lake is empty, travelers will have to wade through a stretch of knee-deep, sticky mud.

At the foot of the Great Wall of Vietnam, under the strict supervision of safety experts, guests will utilize harnesses, ascenders, and specialized protective gear to climb an 18m vertical steel ladder, then continue using ropes to scale a steep rock face rising another 70m with a slope ranging from 45 to 60 degrees. The moment you stand atop the wall, gazing back at the immense space of the cave and catching sight of sunlight filtering through the exit, will be an invaluable reward for your perseverance.

After a light lunch on top of the wall, the group moves through the cave exit, concluding the subterranean path to return to the outside world. Travelers continue trekking a short distance through the jungle to reach the main road by 15:00, where a vehicle awaits to take the group back to the Chay Lap Farmstay resort.

Here, you can dive into the cool swimming pool, shake off all your fatigue, and prepare to join a warm Gala Dinner in the evening with the experts and guides to celebrate the successful conquest of the wonder. The next day, after breakfast, the vehicle will transfer you to Dong Hoi airport or train station, officially concluding the expedition tour.

Day 6: Farewell to Phong Nha

Following the emotional celebration at the Gala Dinner at Chay Lap Farmstay, the sixth day is time for guests to leisurely rest, enjoy the fresh air of the heritage region, and pack their personal belongings.

In the morning or afternoon (depending on each individual’s departure schedule), an Oxalis vehicle will pick you up to drop you off at Dong Hoi airport or train station. The Son Doong expedition officially comes to an end, leaving within the mind of every explorer priceless memories of a surreal wonder and a grand sense of pride in having surpassed their own limits.

Things to Prepare for the Journey to Conquer Son Doong Cave

1. Physical Fitness and Health Conditions (The Deciding Factor)

Due to the nature of this being a high-difficulty adventure trekking tour, travelers are strictly required to undergo a health screening process and truthfully declare their medical history to medical experts. You must not have a history of cardiovascular diseases, asthma, severe joint problems, high blood pressure, or suffers from claustrophobia and fear of the dark.

To be able to walk 10 – 12km per day across treacherous terrain, you need to rigorously train your physical fitness 3 – 6 months prior to the trip. Recommended exercises include:

  • Trekking or hiking a minimum of 10km, interspersed with scaling steep hills ranging from 200m – 300m high.
  • If living in a city, train by walking up stairs continuously for 3 floors without stopping, repeating this 15 times a day.
  • Have prior experience participating in at least 1 – 2 real trekking tours within the past 12 months.

2. Equipment Provided by the Organizer

You do not need to worry too much about bulky camping gear, as the organizer will prepare everything thoroughly and completely for you at the campsites:

  • High-end camping tents (single or double tent options available) with mosquito netting.
  • Thick foam mattresses, pillows, warm sleeping bags, and insulation pads placed beneath the tent floor to block moisture.
  • Protective gear: Specialized safety helmets, high-power headlights, safety harnesses, and lock carabiners.
  • A US-standard water filtration system providing purified, boiled drinking water throughout the journey.
  • A mobile compost toilet system that is environmentally friendly, using Western-style toilet seats and rice husks for odor elimination. All waste will be securely packed by the porter team and carried out of the cave for strict disposal.
  • Emergency medical rescue equipment, oxygen concentrators, and satellite phones to communicate with the outside world.

3. Personal Baggage Travelers Need to Bring Along

  • Trekking clothes (inside the cave): 3 – 4 sets of quick-drying, long-sleeved clothes with good elasticity to protect your body from scratches and insects. Avoid bringing jeans or thick cotton fabrics as they take a very long time to dry when wading through streams.
  • Campsite clothes: 2 – 3 sets of cool, comfortable clothes for summer, or thermal underwear and warm jackets if traveling in winter (as night temperatures inside the cave can drop significantly). Bring 1 swimsuit for swimming in the underground rivers.
  • Shoes and socks: 1 pair of well-fitting trekking or trail-running shoes with excellent grip traction on slippery limestone terrain. Bring at least 4 – 5 pairs of thick, high-ankle socks to prevent leech bites or friction blisters.
  • Eco-friendly personal hygiene: Wet wipes, dry hand sanitizer, or biodegradable (organic) soap to protect the water sources inside the cave. Strictly minimize the use of regular chemical shampoos.
  • Medical and protection: Personal prescription medication, prickly heat powder or anti-fungal foot powder, sunscreen, mosquito and insect repellent spray, sunglasses, and a hat for outdoor trekking sections.
  • Electronic devices: Phones, cameras, a tripod if you wish to shoot long-exposures in the dark cave, and several high-capacity power banks (there is absolutely no electricity inside the cave). Everything must be wrapped in completely waterproof dry bags.

Mandatory Conservation Rules When Entering the Cave

To protect the eternal wonder of Son Doong, travelers participating in the tour must strictly adhere to legally binding regulations:

Travelers must move along the designated path to avoid affecting the ecosystem inside the cave.
Travelers must move along the designated path to avoid affecting the ecosystem inside the cave.
  1. Follow the single trail only: Strictly comply with moving along the small, pre-established trail under the guidance of the tour guide. Do not separate from the group or stray in other directions to avoid trampling the cave floor and destroying pristine geological structures.
  2. Absolutely do not touch the stalactites: Many stalactites and stalagmites in the cave are still actively forming over millions of years. Sweat and bacteria from human hands touching them can permanently halt their growth or discolor them.
  3. The “Leave No Trace” principle: Whatever you bring into the cave must be brought out, including the smallest waste such as candy wrappers or bits of toilet paper. Do not break branches, pick leaves, rearrange, or take any rocks out of the cave.
  4. Respect wildlife: If you encounter snakes, insects, or rare animals, travelers are advised to keep quiet and slowly pass by, absolutely never provoking, attacking, or shining flashlights directly at them to cause panic.

Conquering Son Doong is not merely a vacation; it is a journey that challenges your personal limits in exchange for unforgettable moments standing amidst a fairy-tale kingdom beneath the earth. Wish you the best preparation to bring home unforgettable memories of this magnificent natural wonder!
