Wedding Cake in Son Doong Cave: The giant stalagmite in Doline 1

Date:

The Wedding Cake stalagmite (also known as Wedding Cake) in Doline 1 of Son Doong Cave features hundreds of rimstone layers stacked on top of each other. It formed the shape of a gigantic cake. The top of the stalagmite has been smoothed by a waterfall, creating a flat surface, like a stage where nature performs its exceptionally rare light shows (sunbeams). Wedding Cake feels like a solemn ceremony. It is deliberately arranged by nature to welcome travelers who journey across remote mountains and forests to witness the timeless beauty within the world’s largest cave.

Formation of Wedding Cake in Son Doong Cave

The Wedding Cake stalagmite is located in Doline 1 – Watch out for Dinosaurs, about 3km from the cave entrance. Doline 1 was formed as the underground river continuously eroded the cave rock. Around 500,000 years ago, the cave ceiling above the doline became thinner and could no longer support its weight, causing it to collapse. The collapsed area created an inverted funnel reaching up to 450m in height, with the widest point at the cave floor measuring 125m.

Wedding Cake was formed directly beneath the collapsed doline. The stalagmite is primarily composed of rimstone (or gour dams) combined with waterfalls cascading from the high cave ceiling. Each rimstone layer is enormous, with round or oval shapes stacked from the cave floor to the top, where the upper layers are gradually smaller than the lower ones in a uniform pattern.

The top of this massive stalagmite is directly affected by the strong waterfall, which usually occurs during the rainy season or on days of heavy rain. Falling from hundreds of meters, the water exerts a significant force, causing the tip of Wedding Cake to be flat rather than pointed like other stalagmites.

After cascading down, the water spreads in all directions, creating concentric ripples that extend outward from the center. Over time, rimstone forms along the flow, creating circular patterns resembling a wedding cake. The entire stalagmite and the surrounding rock slopes receive both light and water, allowing plants such as mosses and algae to thrive, covering the doline in green.

Initially, this stalagmite did not have a specific name. However, during one expedition, a traveler stood on top of the stalagmite to propose to his girlfriend. Because of the shape of the stalagmite and this touching story, people began calling it Wedding Cake.

From June to August, when the cave temperature ranges from 22 to 25°C, moisture rising from the underground river forms floating clouds. Especially on rainy days, the waterfall from the top of Doline 1, nearly 450 m high, cascades onto the top of Wedding Cake, creating a spectacular and impressive scene. Travelers can observe from a distance and capture striking panoramic photos.
